Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, the singers raised their voices in praise to the Lord and sang: “He is good; his love endures forever.” 2 Chronicles 5:13-14
Our music ministry exists to glorify God and to unite His children in joy, praise, and prayer. Through a mix of choirs, soloists, organists and congregational singing, music at Payson Park Church enhances our worship by creating a spirit of praise, celebration, thankfulness, and spiritual expression. Through a variety of musical styles, we seek to edify, inspire, and challenge the body of Christ.
We actively seek to involve members of the congregation in the music program, through participation in choirs, special music, and input on musical selections.
Chancel (Adult) Choir
The Chancel (adult) Choir participates regularly in Sunday worship. Made up of volunteers and professional section leaders, the choir sings a wide range of sacred music. Gregorian chant, Renaissance motets, shape note music and works of the great masters comprise the bulk of our repertoire. Our aim is to enhance the spiritual experience of the service through music. All are welcome to join us at rehearsal on Sunday mornings at 9 am in the choir room, regardless of experience or reading ability. Singing with others is a wonderful way to be in community, express yourself and grow closer to God.
Children & Youth Choirs
The Youth Music program at Payson Park consists of two choirs, the Youth Choir and the Cherub Choir. The Youth Choir, which meets Sunday mornings from 9:15-10:15, is made up of singers from second grade through high school. The older singers rehearse alone for the first 30 minutes, and the younger children join the rehearsal at 9:45. During rehearsals, the youth practice singing in parts, and learn vocal technique, sight-singing, and rhythm reading through a repertoire of various styles from folk songs, classical pieces, contemporary praise songs, and traditional African music. They use hand drums, hand bells and percussion instruments to enhance these musical concepts. Their enthusiasm for various styles of music has allowed us to present a number of exciting pieces in worship, while their eagerness for learning has enabled our staff to provide musical education within the framework of performance preparation. The Youth Choir sings during Worship one Sunday a month, leads the Christmas Pageant, and leads Youth Sunday in June.
The Youth Choir also sings with the Adult Choir on occasion. Some of these combined offerings have included pieces for our annual Youth Sunday and our annual Christmas pageant. The Youth choir has also helped lead our Cherub choir in performances.
The Cherub choir is made up of our 3-6 year-olds. They rehearse at 11:15am during Church School time. Using a combination of children's songs, rhythm instruments, hand bells, circle games, and improvisation, children learn how to share their love through music. They sing in Worship about once every six weeks, and sometimes join the Youth Choir as well.
